As someone who has dealt with their mental health spiralling to the point of being admitted to hospital and later diagnosed with depression and anxiety.
To say the admission scared me is an understatement, 3 days away from my children while I was on a stroke unit for what was described as a neurological condition. Non-medically speaking, my body was screaming at me to notice that I was not dealing with things and instead pushing it all away. I went through a traumatic time due to a split with my children father. I felt every emotions possible and usually all in the same day even the same hour. Yet everyday I would paint on my smile and be super mum. If any one asked how I was I replied 'I am OK' and the conversation moved on.
I feel alot of people reply 'I am OK' but should be take it further and say 'I understand but I have noticed...' Having just completed first aid training for mental health I am certain we could all learn from this, not only to support other but to support ourselves.
Why is it easy to support someone else yet neglect our self? Then ask yourself, How can I be there for others if I am not their for myself'. Three days I was unable to be a mother to my children as I was in hospital so this was a turning point for knowing although I put my kids first, I actually needed to be first.
So where to go from here? Well you could buy my book 'Beautifully Broken' with my story in full and tips I have learnt.
I have began to practice gratitude and with COVID now is the time to really be more grateful and appreciate what we have, Cherise the moment, the people in our life and less about material objects. I bet we will all be grateful and appreciate going out for a meal again when allowed, and even a trip to the dancefloor!
I learnt to take some time out just for me, even 10 minutes with a face mask on. A bath. A massage. A treat of your choice. Reading a book. Watching a film. Going out in nature. Even working out. Making sure your health and wellbeing is a priority. Stepping out of your comfort zone. Doing an activity that brings you joy.
I am also passionate about job crafting, so I think this should be entwined to create a work/life balance.
I am intrigued to know what your thoughts are on improving your wellbeing... please comment below.
Sending you selflove, self worth and positive vibes,
Abigail
