LinkedIn is the world's largest professional network on the internet.

A career is not a straight line.
“Everyone you will ever meet will know something you don't” ~ Bill Nye
How Can I Use It?
You can use LinkedIn to find the right job or internship, connect and strengthen professional relationships, and learn the skills you need to succeed in your career.
You can access LinkedIn from a desktop, LinkedIn mobile app, mobile web experience, or the LinkedIn Lite Android mobile app.
A complete LinkedIn profile can help you connect with opportunities by showcasing your unique professional story through experience, skills, and education.
You can also use LinkedIn to organize offline events, join groups, write articles, post photos and videos, and more.
Initially I went back and forth with LinkedIn and didn't see the point. I seen it like an online cv.
Then in 2017 when I went back to university full time I took a little more notice. 2018 I tried to use it to reach out for work. Then in 2019 to post about my awards and achievements. Then at the end of 2020 when I completed my degree I seen a new way to connect with people and use LinkedIn. I still don't seem to get many likes or views but then I realised I was falling down the social media rabbit hole.
I find the more active I am in liking other posts and commenting has helped me be seen more. I am not sure if it is down to Organisational Psychology community being so welcoming and helpful but I have so many new connections. I have found a mentor. I have set up a student support group. Joined a few groups that post relevant content to keep myself in the loop.
So can LinkedIn help your career? Well in my case I would say yes. I have been able to find relevant companies offering work I am interested in. I have messaged people to ask more information and is possible a virtual meet up to discuss. Most people have been very welcoming and open to talking more. Asking questions has been much better than asking for work opportunities. However, I did find asking if places were open to offering work experience and some replied saying due to Covid, no, some told me to keep watching for post advertising opportunities.
During a recent conference I spoke with people from other places of work and we connected on LinkedIn so it has its professional uses as opposed to connecting via forms of social media. I also realised that alot of my contacts I had made were at the event and some even presenting. The companies I highlighted as ones I would be grateful to work with there also presenting.
I feel its all about how you use it, who you chose to connect with. I have used it for free and found benefits, the choice is yours.
Sending you positive vibes,
Abigail
