“A mentor is someone who allows you to see the hope inside yourself. A mentor is someone who allows you to know that no matter how dark the night, in the morning joy will come. A mentor is someone who allows you to see the higher part of yourself when sometimes it becomes hidden to your own view." ~ Oprah
I first had a mentor at secondary school. She was a business owner of a salon and at the time I wanted to get into the beauty world. She taught me a lot about business and work ethic.
I then had a mentor again when I was 27 when I joined the Princes Trust to set up my own business which was to enable me to work around having two children. My mentor was amazing and is still a dear friend now. The business did not work but he could see my passion and enthusiasm and fully encouraged me and still does to this day.
I then had a personal tutor at university and I would say she has been a mentor too. We talk so much and I feel comfortable sharing my thoughts and plans for life. Its actually how I ended up in the field of Occupational Psychology. It made me realise the importance of talking to others and not being afraid to share your passions, it leads to connections.
Since joining my masters programme I have now joined an initiative and have a mentor now and I am 34, so age is but a number!
What's to gain from having a mentor?
You gain knowledge, build confidence, make connections, learn from their experiences, and potentially build a friendship.
Give it a go. Let me know your thoughts ;)
Sending positive vibes your way,
Abigail
